So I got up early this morning and went to the front porch for my New York Times. The newspaper? Okay, stay with me anyway.
KFAR SABA, Israel — Ever since she tested positive for a defective gene that causes breast cancer, Tamar Modiano has harbored a mother’s fear: that she had passed it on to her two daughters. Ms. Modiano had her breasts removed at 47 to prevent the disease and said that the day she found out her older daughter tested negative was one of the happiest of her life.
Now she wants her younger daughter, Hadas, 24, to be tested so she can start a family early if she is positive and then have a double mastectomy too. Ms. Modiano’s elder daughter, Suzi Gattegno, 29, disagrees.
“You’re keeping her from living her life,” Ms. Gattegno told her mother. “You want to marry her off early.”
“If she’s a carrier, she should marry early,” her mother countered.
“She doesn’t even have a boyfriend,” the daughter said. “You need to stop pressuring her.”
“I want to protect her!” Ms. Modiano replied.
Such family debates are playing out across Israel these days….
Blah, blah, blah… and blah.
Don’t get me wrong, this family drama is heartrending, but the story is not the story. Today the Times decided it should become the story.
Apparently Matt Drudge was concerned that the Times editors might, just this once, compromise their journalistic integrity by changing the image, so he ran with a PDF screenshot.
But you know, as important as breast cancer is—all forms of cancer for that matter—it is not exactly front page news that people in Israel have to deal with it too.
And how does the image advance the story?
Just what was the Times’ point in running this story on the front page, above the fold, with a nipple shot? Maybe they’re saying, “Cancel your Playboy subscription guys, we have all the boobs that are fit to print”?
Is the Times this desperate for readers? Like there aren’t headlines worthy of the front page that impact millions of American lives? I mean, we have an administration in the depths of scandal and corruption over ObamaCare… Wait…
Oh, nothing.
One thing is certain: whatever bums are left on the Deuce tonight will be sleeping under a set of boobs, many for the first time in years.
What will the NYT run to boost their miserable dwindling readership tomorrow?
Let’s see. Are Intrauterine Devices failing in Russia?
